Information on Timing and Pattern of Baby Teething

baby teething1 01 Information on Timing and Pattern of Baby TeethingThough teeth (means eruption of milk teeth) become visible among infants generally after 6 months (can be even earlier or later), tiny teeth buds first begin to develop when babies were still in the womb. So every baby is born with a full set of tooth buds lying in wait just beneath the gum line. Problem appears when they start to erupt (in a sequential manner) for some babies delivering painful bite, baby begins to drool, chew and fuss. The pattern of order and timing of teething among babies varies which does not of course indicate any sign of intelligence or anything else. A normal baby will get 20 milk teeth in total and rest comes out within 2.

Teething Timing
As mentioned, timing and pattern of teething among babies are totally variable. 6 months is the ideal age for the babies to get first tooth, however for some babies teething may occur as prematurely as during birth or as late as the age of 15 months. Three months can be considered as the absolute earliest time for teeth are known to sprout (but very rare). Most infants start getting their first teeth around 6-9 months old (although some babies still wait for the first two teeth till their first birthday).

Normally, the bottom two middle teeth, or central incisors, are the first to erupt, accompanied by the top central incisors (at around 6-7 months), and thereafter followed by the other two central top teeth, then the additional two bottom teeth (at around 8 months), molars (chewing teeth) and finally the “canine” teeth (pointed teeth) between the molars and the central four at around 16-20 months.

Teething Process & Pattern

There is no set of pattern for baby teething, when it will begin, how long it will take, and how painful will be for the baby etc. For some babies teething is absolutely not a painful even, whereas for others it can be very much painful experience with many uncomfortable syndromes such as bleeding, mild fever, inflamed red gums, excessive drooling etc. Entire process of teething often follows hereditary patterns, means if mother or father had teething early or late, baby also may follow the same pattern.

However, timing, process or pattern of baby teething is not a matter of serious concern, should be considered as an important milestone in baby’s development. In case of discomfort during teething, you should take care of your little angel and shower love with affection on your baby that they need. Although it can be stressful time for the child as well as the parent, it carries a lot of excitement for both too, a memorable experience for the rest of your life.

Infant Swimming Benefits – The Earlier a Child Is Exposed to Water the Better

baby swimming Infant Swimming Benefits The Earlier a Child Is Exposed to Water the BetterAccording to experts, infancy is the prime time to teach children keeping afloat and swim in the water, because they possess more reflexes in water than older children and adults. But many questions arise among parents regarding safety, infectious diseases, illness etc.; and which is quite natural and matter of concern as well.Water temperature is also anissue of concern, because infants cannot regulate their own temperature properly. Not going further with the debate over suitable age of a child for learning swimming, pediatricians and other infant organizations (like American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), or ISR i.e.) suggest that swimming lessons should be imposed as soon as your child begins crawling and training can be started for infants as young as six months old.

Benefits of taking your baby Swimming

The advantages and proof of infant swimming are starting to become more apparent to parents around the world. There are numerous benefits to consider when taking babies swimming. Here are just a few:

  • Skill for Life – From the very early stage, babies can learn vital life-saving actions, and then, they’ll gradually learn new element to each skill.
  • Physical Benefits — Among the physical benefits include a stronger heart and lungs (whole respiratory system), improved strength and stamina, improved co-ordination and agility as well as stimulating awareness and alertness. A comprehensive study observed that swimming babies were ahead in areas such as control of their vertical position and muscle strength.
  • Fantastic Bonding Experience– Engagement of parents helps to build a unique special bond between them as well as help to develop regular sleeping and eating patterns.
  • Mental Development – During swimming, learning to respond to commands can make baby mentally sharper (aids development of the brain), increasing levels of awareness and understanding. Furthermore “swimming babies” showed a higher intelligence, better social skills, were more independent, less timid and could cope better with new and strange situations.
  • Exercise is Fun – Swimming is an exercise that’s socially stimulating, energetic and really good fun – good for your baby, but great for you as well.

Infant swimming programs must adhere to rigorous safety measures and training protocol to ensure the safety of the baby. If your child is 3 or older but hasn’t spent much time in the water or seems scared of water, it’s a good idea to take a parent-child class together before signing him up for regular swim lessons. However, Parents should be much more aware of the safety as well, and maintain hygiene instructions for their own children related to infant swimming.

Sharing & Cooperation Are Key for Little Ones

kids 210x131 Sharing & Cooperation Are Key for Little OnesThe ability that allows people to work well together as well as make friends and associates throughout life starts when we are babies and are taught how to share. Everything we do as a child that involves cooperating with another is going to be a factor in how we learn sharing. By the age of three, your child will have hopefully begun understanding that through cooperation and sharing, you can enjoy making friends, and getting things done together.

The key to sharing is making sure that kids learn the basics at the youngest age possible, so that it isn’t something that is taught later, but understood as just part of what you do. The more they understand, the easier it is going to be for them to communicate and build respect even in a community of other children. These skills should be reinforced every single day so that they are never left forgotten, and are made to be part of their personal make up. As they grow up, it is going give them the basics for being generous, hard working, and good people.

Here are some things to help get your child on the right path:

* Monkey See, Monkey Do: A child looks up to you in everything that it does. From the way you talk to other people, to the way you share or are generous. By giving them good examples of cooperation, you are going to lead them down the right path to success. Show them that you have to do work, and hopefully they will learn that if you finish it quicker, you can spend more time together. Positive reinforcement, like having them help you with a task so you can enjoy a book is a perfect example.

* The Entire Family Shares: Don’t feel that you have to teach these lessons all alone. Have your entire household involved in a project, that shows your child (or children) what they can accomplish together. Things like the chores of a pet, or helping choose a family outting makes everyone feel involved.

* Dinner Club: Nothing teaches a child the power of cooperation more than making a meal together, since they can do things that ultimately have an end. In this case, having them get you items for the meal, perhaps pouring or mixing, as well as setting the table will show them very clearly that because of their hard work, they get to enjoy a wonderful meal with their family.

* Read All The Time: There are some fantastic books out there that feature sharing and cooperation as their fundamental goal. Whether it is The Very Greedy Bee or A Fair Bear Share, you should take the time to explain to them why the morals of the story are important.

* Musically Inclined: A great example of how cooperation creates great things is music! Play a piece of orchestral music and explain to them how many people that took, and how wonderful it is since they worked together!

The Many Reasons Why Babies Should Play

colorful cube The Many Reasons Why Babies Should PlayEven though a child’s formal education start years after his birth, the foundation of the child’s ability to learn is developed during his playtime because some studies show that babies learn many things during playtime. The things that baby will learn during this time will help in the child’s development.

Tools that can teach the baby

Even normal toys can teach a baby many things during playtime. A colorful cube might be used so that the child will be able to recognize some colors. A simple rattle can become a newborn baby’s first lesson in cause and effect.

Although babies wouldn’t think of it as such, but rather it is a funny thing that makes a sound. The cause is the shaking of the rattle, the effect is the sound produced by the shaking. The baby will recognize that that will happen when you shake it so that he will continue to shake it in order to hear the sound again.

Games like Pat-a-cake and other nursery rhymes are the baby’s first lessons in vocabulary. It is during this time that the baby might start to recognize some words and learn to associate it to the actions as well as his surroundings. As the child grows older, he will be able to recognize more words and will soon be able to use it on his own.

Things that are learned

A child education begins as early as he gets his first rattle (see explanation above) and continues as the child grows older. During the years before a child can be entered in a school to start his formal education, he will have learned at lot of things while playing.

Play time is also used so that the baby can observe his surroundings where he will be able to learn about the things that are around him. As the baby grows, play time can also teach him values that he will be able to apply later in his life.

If the baby plays with another child, he may learn to share his things. Teamwork is also learned when a child plays with other children.

Playtime can also teach the child that learning can be fun. If he sees that he is learning during playtime, he might be encouraged to continue learning because he will associate it with playtime. This eagerness to learn will help in the child’s mental development and will prepare him for his first year in formal education.

Choosing a Play Mat for Your Baby

babyplaymate Choosing a Play Mat for Your BabyIn today’s world, parents would want to give their child all the advantages that they could in order to succeed in life. One of these advantages is the baby’s mental development.

There are many tools that a parent could buy to help their child’s mental development which should help the child to stand out among his peers.

A play mat is such a tool that can help in the visual development of your child.

Importance of a play mat

Getting a play mat is important because it is probably one of the first “schools” that the child will encounter. In the play mat, the child can learn and develop while having fun.

This will also help the child get ready for a more formal setting of learning as he can recognize early on that fun and learning doesn’t necessarily have to be opposites.

Ways to choose a play mat

It is important for parents to make the right choice when buying a play mat for their child as this plays a big part in the child’s development. Not only that, the parents also have to make sure that the play mat they chose is made of the non dangerous materials. Also make sure that there are no loose materials that the baby can swallow which will cause choking.

In order to be safe, parents can choose a play mat from well known brands as they have already built their reputations. These brands also have to pass a lot of tests to ensure the safety of their product.

Known brands will also have user reviews that may be accessible from the Internet which means that parents can make an informed decision regarding what brand to buy based from the experiences of other customers.

Toys make play time more fun and it is not much different in this situation. Many toys included in the package are an advantage in choosing a play mat. Parents can choose a play mat that has many toys hanging from above that the baby can reach for. This will help develop the child’s hand-eye coordination. Toys that have lights and sounds are also advisable since they will help the baby’s visual and auditory development. If the toys that make a sound is shaped like the thing that makes the sound, the baby might learn to recognize different sounds coming from different sources.

“Sports Training” for babies

basketball “Sports Training” for babies“Sports training for babies??? You must be joking”, you would probably say.  But no, it is pretty much in practice now.  As the saying goes, “The younger you start the better”.  Sports training for babies now begin as early as in 6 months of age.

Children are nowadays nurtured enough as athletes before they can even begin to walk.  But a lot of Doctors say that they don’t witness any potential benefit of getting children enrolled in sports.  They even aren’t aware of any training for babies.  If only, it increases the possibility of getting injured before time.

Sports training for babies may not have caught the fancy of mothers in India.  But in countries like the United States, increasing number of mothers are enrolling their babies as early as 4 months of age, for sports training.

The funny thing is that none of these organizations who enrol such young children for training claim that they can turn today’s babies into tomorrow’s sports super stars.  This is because previously companies making such claims have gotten into trouble.

Most mothers enrol their children for such sports training programs mainly as an outlet for their hyper active, high energy children.  Mothers also feel that in this ultra-competitive world, such training would give their children an edge in academics, arts and yes in sports.

And not even children, babies and toddlers are being enrolled for sports related training.  Companies are jumping at the insecurity of the mothers and using it to their advance in creating such programs.

Even fitness facilities have jumped on the band wagon.  The urgency has been created and parents are lining up to enrol their children for such programs fearing that their children might be left behind.  But we may be going a bit too far in trying to give our children the edge.

Child development experts say that their main emphasis should be on the child, not on turning them into the next Michael Johnson.  We need to instil creativity in children.  Encouragement and direction which we think are positive factors could stifle creativity in children.  If a child is always being taught how to move, it stifles the development of skill.

Such training at such a young age might turn out to be counterproductive since it does not teach a baby how to take the SAT Test effectively or how to drive a football into a goal.  Each child has its own developmental schedule.  Attempts to alter the schedule would lead to undesired consequences.

Success in sports involves many factors including genetics, mental attitude etc.  Attempts to teach sporting skills at a younger age may end up backfiring by causing a burn out.

The key is to establish healthy movement patterns and give the child an opportunity to play and reinforce creative and social aspects of exercise.  This would be beneficial for lifelong fitness, rather than later on for an obese child to talk about how he used to play football.

Toddlers have to play. Opportunities have to be given to them to explore their worlds with very little inhibition, and they will be just fine.

When Do Babies Begin Teething?

baby teething1 01 When Do Babies Begin Teething? When your child begins to go through the teething process it can be an exciting and frustrating time in infant care. This process will usually happen for most kids between four and six months of age; with the most common time right before the six month.

The teeth that will begin to peek through your child’s gums at around this age have been with your child since birth. Actually, your child’s entire set of milk teeth or baby teeth are already present at birth under their gums.
There are many signs that are typical of a baby beginning teething although some kids will express only a few or none of the symptoms.

When practicing infant care you may or may not notice the following symptoms in your teething baby. The first is excessive drooling.

This is the most common symptom and leads to many of the others that get exhibited. One of the symptoms attributed to excess drooling is the appearance of rashes on your child’s throat or chin. Another is looser bowel movements because of the extra saliva that is being digested due to the increase in saliva in general.

You child may also begin whining or crying more because teething can be painful or bothersome. This is not always the case though. Many babies do not appear to be bothered at all by their emerging teeth. Finally, some people claim that their children will run a slight fever during the process.

This has been disputed by doctors and may not be the case. Typically you should follow the normal guidelines for fevers that your doctor gives you for when you need to take them to the doctor.

In order to help your child pass through this process with as little molestation as possible, there are many things you can do to try to help soothe your child. There are some medications that can be applied directly to your child’s gum to help numb and soothe the pain involved in teething.

Ask your doctor which brand would be safe for your baby or if he suggests you use any at all. Many parents in the past have given their young ones ice to suck on in order to numb the area.

This can, however, be dangerous since there is a possibility that they will choke on the ice and they are also more prone to dropping the ice which is likely to pick up all kinds of dirt on the floor. For people who would like to use this technique in teething baby care, there are now better alternatives in the form of toys which can be frozen and given to your child.

These toys are larger and tougher so they will not likely be swallowed or rupture and can be easily grasped so they will not fall on the floor as often.
Inevitably your child will begin to teeth at some point and you will have no way of knowing how the process is going to be for them. However, in baby care there are many ways to ease your baby through the process and make it run as smoothly as possible.

Growth and Development of your baby (1 – 9 months)

momandbaby1 Growth and Development of your baby (1 9 months)The growth and development pattern of your child will be unique to him or her, however, there are some guidelines to use in infant care in order to determine if your child is possibly presenting a development of growth pattern that should be cause for concern.

However, there are many children who lag behind these standards significantly but do not wind up having any physical or mental disabilities and were simply following their own pattern.

If your child is significantly behind the norms, you should receive a checkup from a doctor just to be on the safe side and because many of the disorders that can cause delays in development or growth are best treated early and some can even be reversed.

When it comes to your baby’s mobility, for the first two months or so you baby will probably will not have much mobility. However, at two or three months you will begin to see them role over and showing signs of being able to sit on their own. This will continue for several months until around month 6 they are able to sit and around month 8 they will be crawling or scooting very well.

Mobility is one of the infant care measures that are most difficult to judge based on preset standard for when they should hit certain milestones. For instance, do not worry if your baby does not crawl, some babies never do, just check for strength and balance to begin developing through this time.

Your doctor will usually check your baby’s development in mobility by checking if they can roll or hold their weight, throughout this time and can tell you if there is anything to be concerned about.

Another important set of milestones in baby care that are generally expected to develop in these months is your child’s ability to grab or grasp objects. At three months, you child can probably pick up larger toys, although it may take a little time but they will likely have more trouble with smaller items.

By around six months old, you can expect your baby to be developing their skills at grabbing smaller items and picking up things with their fingers instead of solely being able to pick things up using their whole hands or palms.

This will be different from baby to baby however if your child is severely delayed or if you are worried about your child’s progress, you can ask your doctor who can give you a better idea if you should actually be worried.

Finally, throughout this period of infant care your child should begin to clap, wave, point, or do other purpose oriented hand or body movements. Typically this begins to happen after about seven months. This is an important step because it shows not only your baby’s developing coordination but also your child’s mental development as they begin to mimic what you do and remember what they have learned in previous experiences.
