How to choose safe baby toys
When we buy toys for our baby, it is most important to check they are suitable for baby, for her age, and most importantly that they have passed regulatory health care standard tests.
All toys that are sold on the high street or in a specialist baby store that have been safety approved will have a ticket or sticker saying so. In Europe this is the kite mark symbol. Accompanied by this, all toys that are not suitable for new borns or young babies should carry a hazard warning saying that there are unsuitable due to small parts, danger of suffocation etc..
When baby is new born, he really doesn’t need any toys, as all he really is aware of is his own mothers’ scent and feel, his eyesight not even developed properly. When baby does start to see, she will recognize bright colors first, before really defining what it is she really is looking at, relying in her other senses as a new born.
Baby care manuals or your paediatrician or health care visitor at your local baby care center can advise you on the stages of visual development of your new born, and the suitability of toys etc.. As the new born is unable to pick up an object, toys in her nursery or crib are really more for decorative purposes, until she reaches a few months old.
However, baby’s may then like to play with toys, and may have a special toy that they use as a comforter for sleeping with for example. But the truth is that baby seldom plays with her toys, so spending vast amounts of money on toys really is unnecessary, as you may find baby prefers to play with the packaging rather than the actual toy.
So a sensible compromise that would be recommended in any good baby care book is to buy a few, good quality toys for baby. Make sure they have passed the safety test standards, and check yourself, try pulling out the hair from a doll, or taking off his eye. Remember, as soon as baby is old enough to pick up objects, everything literally goes from hand to mouth.
If you believe toys are faulty, report the toy to the manufacturer, to ensure that babies around the globe are not allowed to play with faulty goods. Many ranges of toys have been taken off the market when faults have been found.
The great majority of toys in a normal toy store will say they are only suitable for age three and up. There will be a special shelf or area of the toy store where you will find toys and accessories for new born babies such as activity mats and gymnasiums, always in bright colors, to attract baby’s attention.
Always read the box carefully before purchasing an item, and don’t be afraid to be a bit rough with the toy yourself, giving it a trial run so to speak, because if it passes your own home safety test too, then it should be good enough for baby.

Baby bouncers and walkers
Many parents choose to buy baby a baby bouncer or a baby walker, but we must look at the reason why these products are being purchased, and if they are really necessary for baby, and even if they are bad for baby’s development, the traditional baby walker having been banned in some countries, and no longer available on sale either in specialist baby stores or high street chains.
When baby is new born, she needs little distractions, as of her twenty four hours, she will spend nearly twenty sleeping, and the rest eating. But as our new born baby quickly grows, her eyesight develops, she begins to roll over and grasp toys, sit up, crawl and finally walk.
With each stage of growth from new born to baby to infant, baby will spend less time asleep and more time awake, needing entertainment or to be entertained. With the high speed life styles that we lead in the twenty first century, we rarely fund a mother who has all her time to devote to her new born, so we find products to keep baby amused whilst we get on with house chores or work. When baby gets older and can sit up and crawl, a lot of parents opt to use a baby pen or den, knowing that it is soft and cushioned , and that baby can come to no harm sat therein while we cook the dinner or tend to the laundry etc..
Two other products, that however are very controversial, are the baby bouncer and the baby walker. Baby walkers have already been taken off sale in many countries, and if you consult your baby care specialist, or health care worker at your baby care center, you will find only negative reports about the usage of baby walkers. The name baby walker suggests that it is an aid to baby walking. This is entirely untrue, as baby does not practice to hold her own balance whilst sat in the baby walker, only moving around, pushing herself from wall to furniture and back. Baby walkers were introduced as a distraction for baby, something that will amuse baby so we don’t have to. In some situations a distraction for baby is not a bad idea, but in the case of the baby walker, actually impedes normal development, as a baby who is put in a baby walker for long periods of time every day will actually be later to lean to walk unaided.
Another controversial “distraction” for baby is the baby bouncer, baby loving the feeling of being bounced around, and up and down. However, baby bouncers have also been proven to be non beneficial to baby’s’ development, as well as dangerous if not fitted properly, the regular baby bouncer being fitted above a door frame. We do not know how strong or durable the door frame of our house is, and as baby gains in weight, many a baby bouncer has come to snap free from its supposed safety fittings.
If you wish baby to bounce, your best option is a trip to the park, where you play together with baby on specially designed bouncing toys, where you are by baby’s side to check baby is safe.
Although these two products, the baby bouncer and the baby walker are still available and on sale in many countries, as well as still being widely used, general opinion of any qualified professional in child development or baby care, is to stay well clear of these products, as not only can they slow down the natural learning processes of baby, they can also be unsafe.
